GATIC drainage solutions specified for ground-breaking Costa Rican port

Gatic Ultraslot and Gatic Access Covers from Alumasc Water Management Solutions (AWMS) have been installed at Moin Container Terminal in Costa Rica – the country’s first purpose-built artificial island.

The terminal, in the Limon Province of Costa Rica, was developed by a consortium including dredging specialists Van Oord and BAM International. It is operated by APM Terminals and covers around 80 hectares to a depth of 16 metres. The site is the largest transportation infrastructure project in the history of Costa Rica. It boasts more than 2.2 km of breakwater, 6 million cubic metres of fill, 6 cranes, and power connectivity for 3,800 refrigerated containers.

Port specialist Jacobs (then trading as CH2M Hill) was tasked with the project´s design, and following their successful use of Gatic Slotdrain on previous port projects, they specified Gatic Ultraslot at the Moin Terminal, for its ability to cope well with the high rainfall intensity and huge amounts of superficial water presented at the location.

The Gatic Slotdrain range of surface water drainage channels is capable of handling any conceivable combination of drainage demand and loading requirement. Its unique hexagonal profile was developed by Gatic to ensure optimum efficiency through varying volumes of rainfall. UltraSlot is used in external concrete areas subject to constant traffic, making it ideal for the Moin Container Terminal. The system allows sufficient depth of concrete over the main body of the channel to withstand ultra-heavy-duty loads.

Also enabling the precision specification in Costa Rica, was Gatic’s hydraulic calculator: a powerful tool for designers with a user-friendly platform to accurately calculate pipe sizes and run capacity. It maximises hydraulic capacity for the lowest cost, to the full benefit of the client. At Moin, the calculations were developed by the designer in consultation with the contractor. The total quantity designed and supplied was almost 3,500 metres, with a significant number of large units measuring 500 and 600 mm.

Exacting standards, uniquely sealed

BAM International also purchased Gatic Access Covers for the project. Since 1928, Gatic has continued to develop its range of unrivalled access solutions, capable of tackling the most punishing of modern industrial environments.

Gatic access covers can be typically found in airports, ports, container docks, data centres, water treatment works, gas and electricity facilities, highways and tunnels.

As a modular system manufactured using ductile cast iron components, Gatic Access Covers can be assembled into virtually any size or shape of cover, to protect and allow easy access to a comprehensive range of underground services across various commercial and industrial venues.

All of the basic components for Gatic covers are cast to exacting specifications and composition of the ductile iron is tightly controlled in order to achieve the non-rocking, gas- and air-tight standards upon which the Gatic reputation is built. When correctly installed, Gatic Access Covers can be expected to perform as intended for the lifetime of the concrete surround.

The installation of Gatic drainage solutions at Moin Container Terminal has put Gatic on the map in South America.
